THE COHERENT BREAKDOWN
You know, natural life is an amazing dance of complex coherency that has evolved for a long time. Life is beyond an integrated whole, it is a oneness. of such complex design that we are only on the edge of understanding. It is like the human body, at once a whole and at the same time so many interconnected parts and also separate organs. Kind of mind boggling, isn’t it?
I certainly do not claim to grasp this natural wonder of complexity or why it dances as it does. But, it all does fit in so many ways. Things like the food chain, the environmental support, the flora/fauna dance, and so much adaptation mechanisms that allow such a diverse life to exist on this planet. Pretty amazing in its complexity. As scientists study this, they uncover how complexity breeds more and more complex responses in order to survive. It works.
As the human came into a dominant role with the capacity of the our intellect, we developed a separate intelligence, at once similar to that of the natural world in our ability to observe, and then in a contradiction to that world with our interjection of the purely human notion of the idea of “control” and simple cause and effect. The human artificially stepped outside the natural world and created the “thought world” that tried to capture all the complexity of the natural world in an abstraction. And key to this abstraction was the desire to “understand in order to control” and use nature for the sole purpose of the human aspect of nature.
In this endeavor, we left our natural state and created a super-natural being that believed that this world was here for us. All it took was for us to discover the rules and laws that governed nature and then we could control things for our advantage. We wanted to be God.
Of course, this did not work out too well, but we did begin to discover many, many aspects of the natural world that could be used to our advantage. This seeming feeling of being “above” nature led to more and more study and exploitation of the natural and then the human states. We were told that, with just enough study and conceptual intelligence, we can become masters of our world. This overlay of abstraction on the natural world was then taken to be the same as that natural world. We forgot that the idea was not the actual.
This worked for quite awhile and we progressed as a “civilized society” creating more and more ways to be alienated from the world we actually live in. I see that this is slowly coming home to roost. Our desire to capture complexity in our various abstractions, has led to more and more complexity in our abstractions! Do you see this? As if our natural world in it’s own being was not complex enough, we now layer all sorts of ideas about that, to the point of enormous distraction and unimaginable complexity. The outcome of all this is a huge disconnect. We are beginning to more and more fall back to simplistic answers to the complexity of life. The normal human mind can not grasp this complexity.
I see this as the natural process of trying to figure out living. This is not to say that the real scientific observers of life should stop. Real observation is wonderful. It is the majority of us humans who want conclusions about all this, who are leading us into a time of simplistic insanity. In the face of incomprehensible complexity, those who want to “know” are falling for answers that distort the reality of our living. And then they simply want to enforce their simple reality on those around them. All for that magic of control that we have attributed to God. And what we have forgotten, is that simple thing this all began with……
We are all part of the One. We are that thing called God. We are with all this when we become present to our natural gifts of awareness and presence. Tlane 2/9/12
I love this
And what touches you about this, Sarah? If I may ask… tom
I love the conclusion: And what we have forgotten, is that simple thing this all began with……
We are all part of the One. We are that thing called God. We are with all this when we become present to our natural gifts of awareness and presence
I love it for two reasons. First, I believe it to be true. Second, it seemed a gentle and peaceful ending to this essay. When I read it……..I exhaled.
Thank you, I am touched..t
